After joining the Electric Revolution with the launch of the Golf GTE as part of the brand’s electric motoring strategy, Volkswagen expands its range with the addition of the new plug–in hybrid Passat which brings emissions from 37g/km and can travel up to 31 miles in all–electric mode and at speeds of 81mph in the default E–mode. In the GTE mode, the efforts of the petrol and electric motor are pooled to provide a claimed 0–62mph time of 7.6sec and a 140mph top speed.
The model, which is available in saloon and estate ‘Variant’ bodystyles and is to be sold in the UK. The Passat GTE shares various elements of its high–tech driveline with the recently introduced Golf GTE. As with the smaller hatch, the plug–in Passat has the capability to run exclusively on electric propulsion for extended distances or on a combination of petrol and electric power.
The drivetrain is similar to that of the Golf GTE and features a 154bhp 1.4–litre TSI petrol engine and 114bhp electric motor, which combine to produce 215bhp and propel the Passat to 62mph in under eight seconds.
In Europe, emissions for both models stand at 39 to 37g/km with official NEDC fuel consumption of 1.7 to 1.6l/100km.
The E–Mode can be used for up to 50km and can be deployed at the touch of a button.
Equipment includes Driver Alert System, Automatic Post–Collision Braking, the Front Assist ambient traffic monitoring system including City Emergency Braking function, a rain sensor and ParkPilot for front and rear.
The Passat GTE also brings unique styling features including a completely redesigned bumper with a C–shaped LED daytime running light signature, as seen on the brand’s other plug–in and electric models, and bespoke 17–inch alloys.
The Volkswagen Passat GTE brings low emissions and fuel consumption to the large saloon segment–superbly combining performance, comfort & efficiency. The potential fuel savings for fleets are extraordinary.
